EMERGENCY   MEDICAL   SERVICE   (E.M.S.)

In April 1996, Phase 1 ot the Jamaica Fire Brigade EMS began in the western towns of Savanna-la-Mar, Negril and Ironshore, with Lucea being added in August of the same year (1996). (Plans are on stream for Falmouth to be added soon)

The EMS is staffed by Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and is another functional arm of the Jamaica Fire Brigade.

EMTs are trained locally and overseas and their duty is to retrieve, care for and deliver victims to an appropriate medical facility in the shortest possible time and under the best possible conditions".


They respond to:

Road traffic accident.
Life threatening trauma.
Cardiovascular emergencies.
Unconscious persons.
Acute respiratory distresses.
Severe bleeding.
Obstetric emergency.
Any other medical condition that is life threatening and requires emergency action that is within the scope of the EMTs.


Equipment used includes a state of the art ambulance fully equipped with oxygen, suction and other basic life support equipment. Each EMS Station is equipped with an ambulance and sixteen (16) EMTs.



The demand for their services has been sound and an expansion programme incorporating Linstead, Old Harbour, Portmore and the Corporate Area is now being planned.
