The hydraulic platform consists of a number of steel booms linked together with
joints, each boom is manipulated with hydraulic rams. At the end of one boom is
a cage, this can be used to rescue people or carry equipment aloft.
The
payload of the cage is much greater than that of a turntable ladder. The model shown here is a Simon 263 which has a maximum elevation of 31.5m and a lifting capacity of 360kg.
The main advantage of this vehicle over
a turntable ladder is its ability to reach over the roofs of buildings. It
cannot however be rested against a building and used as a staircase like a
turntable ladder. This vehicle can also be used as a water tower and has
compressed air piped to the cage so that operators can use breathing masks and
air operated tools.
